21-year-old activist wins World Environment Day video competition

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) announced that Fatin Chowdhury, a 21-year-old environmental activist and student from Canada, is the winner of the 2014 video blogging competition

The winner was selected from among 70 entries by a UNEP panel, including goodwill ambassador Don Cheadle.

Here’s the winning entry:

« It was quite empowering to see how willing people were to contribute to the project and support my vision, » said Chowdhury in a statement.

I am looking forward to celebrating World Environment Day 2014 and highlighting the importance of enabling the voices of Small Islands Developing States to propel action.

Chowdhury wins the opportunity to travel to the UN’s World Environment Day events, which will be held at a small island developing nation. There, he will cover the events via video blog. Past winners of the blogging competition reported from Rwanda, Mongolia, Brazil and India.

This year’s World Environment Day theme focuses on island nations and climate change. Small island nations are already being impacted by the sea level rise, yet their adaptations may serve as a lesson book for coastal communities around the world.

World Envrionment Day is June 5. Learn more at unep.org/wed.
